NVIDIA announced at CES 2017 that it would revolutionize the car transportation world in upcoming three years, releasing the Level 4 automation of cars on the roads not later than 2020. This has become available due to the rapid development of equipment that has been previously much weaker. It is now able to take data from the cameras located on a car, LIDARs, sensors, and scanners, merge it into the data flows, put it on the map on the perceived world, receive updated of the surrounding environment, plan the location and the velocity of the car to produce the real-time changing route in the real-time changing environment. Doing it, it will move the car through space and will evaluate the current risks during the way, helping with a control to minimize them informing a driver time to time, about what’s happening. This all will be integrated with car’s infotainment system with a touchscreen that will deliver the magnificent driving experience.
This approach will change the transportation industry forever. The industry that has over 1 billion passenger vehicles, 0.5 million buses if to take only bug cities, 0.3 billion trucks that ride over 1 trillion miles annually, and 20 million ridesharing pieces every day globally. This all will be impacted by the development and will lower the risks of road accidents, including deadly collisions, and will save million of human lives.
Having the Co-Pilot software installed, the vehicle will alert a driver about potentially dangerous situations. With the capability of reading your lips and following your look, it will understand driver’s commands better even in extreme noise that will contribute to the overall safety of driving.
NVIDIA is a partner of Audi and they will reach Level 4 automation in 2020. They also cooperate with Baidu, TomTom, Here, and Zenrin to make quality HD mapping and live update of the world.
The changes have a given name – Xavier. A chip that is small enough to fit in one palm of a hand will be a prophet of a new technological revolution. It has own operation system and consumes only incredibly low 30 watts making mind-blowing 30 trillion operations every second. It will be able to self-learn through the computer cloud to become constantly wiser on the road. It means that the future is now.
