In 2016, there was a testing of different types of autonomous cars on roads of California, which revealed many disagreements, but one thing can be told precisely: Waymo was ahead of the competitors in all respects.
The company, which is responsible for autonomous cars demanded to make testing among cars to submit the annual report, which would show distinctions in technologies. This year on February, such reports were published. They contain information about the miles and toe-outs from winter 2015 to autumn 2016, which, in total, last one year. The following brands of the cars beginning with BMW and ending with Tesla took part in the reports. They presented statistics of tests of independent cars while Hondas and Volkswagen declared that they didn’t hold testing in general.
Creation of feeling of understanding of self-propelled cars on the Californian roads was the purpose of such testing. With the help of it, people can make sure of the safety of such transport and hope that the enterprises, which held such testing, will be able to check and improve the gears.
Waymo, the automatic car, created by the Google company, is the absolute leader in the fight for the first place in the rating of autonomous cars. Waymo passed the largest number of miles. At the same time, it has the smallest number of failures in comparison with any other company making automatic cars. Waymo could pass 635,868 miles independently having only 124 failures, which fall on average on each 5128 miles. The distance, which the car could pass, is in 31 times more in mileage than all other companies showed combined.
BMW has the high rating of failures approximately on every 638th mile, and Bosch has the worst indicator on each 0.68 miles.
Also, quite good indicators could show SAE Level 4, which passed 9776 miles. The rate of failures showed the acceptable tendency of stops on each 380 miles.
To learn how these cars really safe, it is worth addressing simple calculations. On average, the American drivers pass about 13,476 miles a year. Statistically, they have 165,000 miles passed in each car.
Some people assume that such figures are strongly reduced and the government doesn’t report approximately about 55% of accidents.
According to these calculations, the cars having the lowest interest of accidents, for example, made in Waymo can be about 30 times worse, than the average driver. Also, it can be about 16 times worse taking into account the fact that some car accidents specified in ratings are held back. However, you shouldn’t pay attention to the number of disengagements as ones can’t be equated to the accident, which can be prevented.
Also, disengagements often work in cases when danger is rather high. Drivers in vehicles often make a mistake, which concerns care. The automated cars know about potential dangers much more than the usual US driver, and take measures much earlier than the majority of drivers. Disengagement is a security measure, which works even in those cases if the vehicle could cope with a situation.
As these measures were created to protect people on the road, it also means that it doesn’t allow to give an exact result on an occasion of the safety of the car.
Developers of these cars who analyze all disengagements can confirm with the high statistical probability that such situations can’t be equated to the accident.
Considering all these factors, it is possible to tell that Waymo could reach the same level of safety, as the car with the average driver.
