In early 2015 Uber and one of the leading technical universities of the US – Carnegie Mellon – teamed up to introduce a new technological entity, Uber Advanced Technologies Center. The location was based in Pittsburgh, which made it extremely convenient to use the technical and research base of Carnegie Mellon’s located nearby.
Both sides announced their mutual commitment to have long-term relations and finally come up with something revolutionary in the self-driving car industry. Uber’s main idea is to make public and heavy-truck transportation safer and more convenient to people all over the world.
Uber doesn’t make it a secret that the company looks for new staff and specialists, as well as the territory and facilities to test and research their innovations in autonomous vehicles. The key research areas for the company right now are mapping and an issue of safety. As one of Uber’s top executives Jeff Holden stated, the company is so excited about this new opportunity and really appreciates CMU’s expertise and knowledge in those directions Uber is seeking to improve. Being an international transportation leader, Uber will try to enhance those technologies that are crucial for self-driving vehicles, so investments in this partnership will be a great thing and wise step for the company.
But Uber-CMU partnership will touch not only the question of technologies. The former side is ready to provide financial support for the whole faculty and even attract future graduates to join their company. And Carnegie Mellon’s staff are really excited about this partnership. They see Uber as a fast-growing innovative company that pays serious attention to research and improvement of the whole transportation system that can bring innovative technologies to millions of drivers around the planet. The new Uber Advanced Technologies Center is going to deal with real-world tasks and developments.
Moreover, the partnership is greatly evaluated by the local community, as the new center will provide a lot of new jobs and will make Pittsburgh another center of self-driving technologies attractive for the whole technical community. Thus, the center got support from the side of the local authorities, too, who see the news as a great chance to increase the city’s cooperation with universities located nearby.
