Even when developing automatic cars, there is a probability that such technology won’t be able to exist because some cities aren’t suitable for use of such cars. Computer-controlled cars can create a traffic jam or pollution if the cities have no plan at the disposal of this new technology.
There are some American cities, which already are suitable for steering of self-propelled cars. To surprise, such places as San Francisco, the center of cars with an independent control, isn’t even included in the list of top 20 most suitable cities.
The several main American towns have the highest index according to the company, which analyzes the data of a traffic assembled from the main infrastructure and gears.
The index doesn’t display political or social well-being of the cities. It shows how people move there at the moment. Avery Ash, the independent strategist of the transport market in Inrix told that there would be not enough sense at using the automated cars if modes of movement of people don’t meet standards, which are required for the creation of a good situation for use of such technologies. The company used data to understand models of movement and to reveal the cities, which are capable of taking the maximum benefit from this technology.
According to them, at using independent gears, such as self-propelled motor cabs, short routes will be the most successful option. These shorter passing can be more effective, safer, fast, and more convenient. In the cities, in which use of small routes is required, the use of such cars will be most acceptable.
Inrix analyzed one million various locations including 1.3 billion trips made within a year in the safest 50 American cities. The company watched movements of cars, which happened in the certain radius and compared them to establish the percent of intra-city conveyance.
When drawing up rating, Inrix paid attention to the percent of intra-city conveyances, distance (10 miles or less) and combined these two parameters to give to each city an assessment on 100 points-scale. The cities with big intra-city conveyance and short routes received the highest rating.
The index is an indicator, the purpose of which consists in forcing the cities to think of where autonomous cars have to be used and where they have not.
The system of testing of the company uses different data from different cars, connecting the demographic data obtained from the American population census — age, the income of a family and a part of people who use various modes of transportation to reach the destination.
It is necessary to reveal main objectives of transport for the different cities, to understand how to use the automated transport. For example, the city, which wants to strengthen a car traffic to expand opportunities for people of the senior generation, has greater weight to all cities in which there is a big concentration of people of 65 years and older. The city wishing to reduce congestion in the center can find convenient function of the automatic search of the parking.
