In March 2017, VW Group presented its new Sedric (an acronym from Self-Driving Car). This concept does not have the wheel to steer, gears, pedals, and the entire interaction between its passengers and a vehicle is done through voice commands. There is no driver, and every passenger can be a driver, the same, as they all become passengers while on-board of this real Level 5 autonomy car. Once got inside, the people set the destination, select the optimal route, define the intermediary stops, and have fun while riding to the point. The front window of the vehicle is actually a huge OLED screen that turns the trip into a fun thing as passengers can receive the augmented reality of the surrounding landscape, as well as to watch media and listen to music.
The salon of the car is done using high-class leather of birch color (that is very nice and soft on touch, as manufacturer say) and the wooden inserts. The spacious interior allows putting a luggage in the center of the car, while the seats are arranged on the front and on the rear sides of the vehicle (though, with the absence of a driver, front and rear become relative notions in this self-driven car).
The battery is located in the floor between the seats’ lines. The low ground clearance presumes it will drive on the very nicely made roads.
In addition to fun when traveling, the car is designed to bring more sense in the traveling experience – it can pick a man up from an airport, drive the kids to the school, left off the parent in the office, and went off to search for a parking lot. The automation and autonomy levels are destined for people with disabilities either, who can’t properly drive a car, and for people that don’t have a driver’s license, too.
While VW Group is pointed heavily on the creation of a fleet of autonomous electric vehicles by 2025, they also believe there’ll be lots of people who would still love to possess an autonomous car as their property. Sedric is designed in a way to meet the demand of such people too.
Sedric does not have a logo of VW on the front side, as it is the first car produced by the Group, a mother of Volvo, Volkswagen and other brands, and it will be the good basis for the development of other vehicles, using some part of technologies present in this concept. It means all brands of the group can obtain technologies from Sedric.
VW Group wants to become a leading provider of mobility in the world to 2025.
