The state leadership represented by the mayor of Portland and the Bureau of Transportation decided to develop a set of rules and restrictions that are mandatory for compliance during testing of vehicles on autonomous driving. It is planned to limit the tests to a two-month period. Such a move is a kind of voice in support of the developing industry, as well as the desire of the State of Oregon and the city of Portland, in particular, to participate in the introduction of new technologies.
The mayor of the city responsibly stated that the big city of Portland can’t and does not want to stay away from such fateful innovations. In the opinion of the management, a much more responsible and important step will be a step towards the development of technologies, not a blind expectation of the result. Another reason why the city took this important decision is the desire to protect the residents as much as possible before the technology is officially introduced. The more tests will be conducted in different territories and in different conditions, the higher the probability that cars will become “smarter” and safer.
Among the planned innovations is a possible need to change the design and appearance of traffic signs further, so that car sensors could recognize them more easily.
It is important for the city’s management to understand how autonomous vehicles can easily adapt to the conditions of a specific locality. Another important aspect is their need for residents and their influence on the production of harmful exhaust gasses. The possibility of the city’s participation as an investor is not excluded: the treasury is ready to offer its financial assistance to those companies that are engaged in the issue of implementing an autonomous public transportation.
Another state that expressed a desire to participate actively in the development of this technology is Washington. Google has already tested its cars on the territory of Seattle, and the group of active supporters of the introduction of autonomous cars is already working on the creation of certain regulatory rules for a more rapid and easy adaptation of the state and its residents to new technologies.
It is interesting that the attitude towards the introduction of such technologies has changed quite rapidly and dramatically. After the beginning of real tests, people realized that the future and the autonomous cars would come quickly enough. Besides, it looks like something inevitable. That’s why the curiosity and sincere desire to touch the real future replaced the discontent and fear.
