Bosch will cooperate with NVIDIA to build a computer to embrace the next-generation technology produced by NVIDIA named Xavier. Currently, this technology (that has been presented at CES 2017) allows making 30 trillion operations per second that are necessary to handle the gross bulk of data coming from all kinds of sensors located on the driverless vehicle: scanner, LIDAR, camera, radar, and sensors. It all goes to the computing cloud that is available to educate oneself to handle these tasks:
• understand the surrounding terrain and the environment around that include not only road itself but the road situation such as precipitations, signs, objects moving on the ground, objects moving in the air (if any), road markup, obstacles, boundaries, lawns, corners and edges, and so on – everything of what the world around comprises,
• localize the car in this environment combining it with an HD map,
• compute to foresee the further actions of a car and all moving objects in the environment,
• make the safest way ahead or backward in the real time based on the cars’ aerodynamics, physical capabilities, and limitations.
To perform these tasks, a car required to have a really powerful computer onboard. But not only – the biggest complexity was in self-learning system that would take into account millions of possible road situations and nuances in the real life and learn on their basis to deliver the safe driving process as the result.
Prior to the emergence of Xavier chip with so high computing capabilities and the ‘cloud brain’, the self-learning process was extremely slow if possible at all in the volume required to have the real self-driving car on public roads. With it, NVIDIA and Bosch hope to make this world a better place by delivering the integral system that will open doors to many people that were not able to use cars before, largely contributing to vehicle’s safety.
By delivering this technology, NVIDIA will make ‘a car smart,’ as told Jen-Hsun Huang, founder and CEO of NVIDIA. They will bring the artificial intelligence to people with a fast computer chip and Bosch will be the reliable partner making it happen soon.
