Volkswagen has presented a concept car in January 2017 that is the re-imagined and reconsidered classical VW’s bus of model Type 2 that first was presented in 1950-ies and known as The Bus in the US and as The Camper in the UK. This is the new-fashioned electric vehicle that, apparently, has the same DNA, but a totally new way of look and includes up to 8 passengers none of which have to hold the steering wheel.
The bus is very spacious inside and the inner premise is arranged to include 1 or 2 luggage compartments, and as max 8 people as min 4 of them, varying the degree of comfort. When taking aboard 8, all passenger seats are turned towards the direction of drive and have the minimal space for feet. When there are 4 of them, there is room to sleep, chat, and have a lounge rest. All seats have this functionality:
• they may be turned facing each other, when there is enough space to do that,
• they are plugged and unplugged from the base of the floor of a vehicle, depending on how many people will be inside,
• when auto-driven, the wheel retracts in the dashboard and the front passengers can turn in seats to rear passengers, taking the control panel to the middle to arrange a party with Bluetooth music,
• all seats are folding and unfolding in several positions: to seat, to lay back, and to serve as a small table.
In addition to that, thanks to Volkswagen’s ID system, there is an opportunity to record your personal preferences, so the car would adjust to several drivers when they take over the control.
The bus has 4 wheels drive and has a 369-power motor that is enough for 270 miles of the one-charge ride. It is perfectly enough to get to the countryside from the city and to get back on one charge.
It all means that now, there is no need to have an operator on the wheel and some people say that there can be smoking and drinking inside of a car, as the driver may use alcohol too. But experts are silent about this ‘option’ and say that there will be a great potential for the market of self-driving vehicles that will take people from point A to point B on demand. Thus, people won’t have a necessity to possess a car and they’ll have a possibility to call it when necessary, get to the destination without steering a wheel, and pay less for this ride, as there’ll be no price for man-driver salary.
As of the date of its presentation, this bus is still a concept, so it is indefinite that this model will be sold to commercial customers after all. But as since VW makes great efforts for the 2020-2025 period, to sell up to 1 million electric cars, maybe autonomous ones (and this bus too) will take a significant part in it
