The Uber Technologies company announced the contract with large car maker within the program for creation of one of the first world parks of autonomous vehicles.
Uber reported about the signing of the agreement on the partnership with the German concern Daimler AG, producer of premium cars and auto trucks by the Mercedes-Benz brand. According to the agreement, in the nearest future, Daimler will add Mercedes-Benz autonomous cars to the growing park of self-driving Uber vehicles.
Without cooperation with carmakers, the Uber service wouldn’t be able to achieve the planned objectives as the investment of capital in the development of autonomous technologies, a key component of driving strategy, nevertheless isn’t enough without production base for the release of vehicles and experience.
‘Such car makers as Daimler have crucial importance for our strategy because Uber has no experience of production of cars, and actually creating such cars is not easy’ — the executive director of Uber reported in his blog.
Daimler will present the cars with own navigation devices and programs but working on the Uber platform. Terms of their release aren’t determined. Though Daimler will try to begin deliveries of self-driving cars for Uber as soon as possible, it will happen in several years and will depend on current laws.
The Daimler concern is known as the first concern, which tested pilotless auto truck on the road in 2015. Uber has plans for freight transportation too. In August, the company got a startup with Otto, producer of trucks, and is going to start own service of logistics and a pilotless cargo transportation.
