BMW reported the development of driverless vehicles, capable of moving even on extreme sections of the road with sharp turns.
To control and navigate, the cars use the latest radar systems, video cameras, and sensors. The presented model is able to turn even at high speed and drift absolutely independently. The modified model was introduced in 2014 in Las Vegas. For the demonstration were chosen Coupe and Gran Coupe of the 2nd and 6th series.
As for the check on the road, the cars showed excellent results when passing a section of the road 40 miles long in Germany.
Another important achievement was the ability of new models to recognize the need to stop movement. So, for example, cars automatically muffle the engine and turn to the side off the road to activate the emergency call in the case if a driver needs medical assistance.
The goal of the company’s developers was to create a car that will be completely autonomous even in difficult conditions. It’s amazing that the car’s skills are so high: professional drivers often spend years trying to achieve similar results. At the same time, manufacturers paid great attention to the safety of models. Despite the emphasis on the motion at speed, the developers also increased security measures on the dynamic limit and reaction to obstacles.
Both models of cars are equipped with LIDAR systems: this system allows cars to determine the presence of an obstacle with the help of a laser and to construct a way of its bypassing. The movement of a driverless vehicle is more like a movement under the control of a professional driver and gives a minimum of misfires. Of course, for the development of techniques for conducting the route, the information and skills of the riders as a prototype were used. That’s why all the movements are so realistic.
The use of technology is planned not only within the racing cart: even not extreme drivers will be able to evaluate all the advantages of new models. Use of such cars is planned on risky sections of the road to reduce the level of accidents. The improvement of models continues: the developers intend to create an even more realistic version of the system in the near future and present it to the wide publicity.
