The Chinese company Baidu is interested in the beginning of a mass production of autonomous cars. To do this, Baidu decided to open an auxiliary platform, where each manufacturer will be able to draw the resources for launching its own production of such equipment. The name of the project sounds as Project Apollo. The main information contained in the project is information about the software and the technical equipment of cars that will help create routes and work with information about roads around the world.
The first goal should be reached by the middle of summer 2017: in July, Baidu plans to launch a series of working cars in a restricted environment, and a little later, the cars should be smart enough to cope with the real city roads. The final date for the full implementation of this technology in action is 2020.
Among the personal goals of the company, which has long been engaged in similar developments, there is a goal of releasing its own fully fit autonomous car already in 2018. The main competitor of Baidu on the technical basis is Google, but Baidu is already working on the introduction of their cars on the testing base in California. The majority of tests pass there, which are considered the most promising in this area.
Earlier, Baidu cooperated with the BMW concern on the creation of autonomous vehicles based on BMW, but not so long ago, the cooperation ceased due to disagreements in the ultimate goals of the concerns. At the moment, Baidu is actively searching for partners of the proper level, mainly to continue the development and improvement of the Apollo project. Baidu needs a reliable partner capable of producing quality cars with other related equipment, such as necessary cameras, laser sensors and much more.
China is considered one of the most promising and developed countries, in particular in the field of autonomous technology. A powerful push and launch of active development in China indirectly serve as an incentive for the development of similar technologies in the United States.
As one of the first partners in the difficult task of introducing technologies of the future acted Chery, one of the flagship brands in the Chinese automotive industry. The company plans to combine the production of reliable cars with the introduction of technology from Baidu with the support of technical maps of the area, timely updating of data and, in the future, with working artificial intelligence. The company’s plans are constantly expanding.
